Soft, strong and beautiful
We have always woven with linen at Georg Jensen Damask. This strong and beautiful material was the only thing we used for over a hundred years, until cotton found its way to Denmark.
Simple, natural and almost indestructible. There are many reasons why linen continues to be one of our favourite materials. Linen has a beautiful and classic look that fits well with Scandinavian interior design and its focus on good, natural materials and long durability.

Linen is one of the oldest plants to be used for textile production, and the natural material was the only one we wove with until around the Second World War, which is when cotton became available in large quantities in Denmark. Everything from bed linen to towels and tablecloths was woven from linen.
MORE BEAUTIFUL OVER TIME
Despite the fact that cotton has overtaken linen as our most used material, linen is still popular. This is not least because it has so many wonderful properties: It's a strong and virtually indestructible material that lasts for many years, and it only gets softer and more beautiful over time. At the same time, it has a high level of absorbency and can absorb moisture fast, which is practical when linen is used for things like kitchen towels and napkins.
THE RIGHT CLIMATE
Linen can be both long and short-fibered. We only weave textiles from long-fibered linen because it is the strongest and doesn’t shed lint after washing. Conditions for linen cultivation in Europe are good in countries with temperate coastal or island climates, where temperatures are cool and humid. In Belgium, northern France and the south of the Netherlands, the weather conditions are particularly good for the slender plant with the beautiful violet flower.
